Are you planning to visit an inmate but unsure where to begin? This guide will help you understand what you need to know before your visit, including visiting hours and important guidelines.
It's essential to complete a visitor's application and have it approved before visiting a correctional facility. Each facility has specific visitation days and times, with restrictions on the number of visits and visitors per inmate.
Remember, visitation is a privilege that can be revoked, and all visitors are subject to search. Dress codes are strictly enforced, and special procedures apply to minors visiting with a parent or legal guardian. Legal or professional visits have separate rules and times, and often can occur outside of the normal visiting hours.
Visitation times may be subject to sudden changes or cancellations without prior notice, so we recommend contacting the facility before heading out for your visit. When visiting an inmate, it's advisable to bring only the allowable items with you into the facility.
Tobacco, cell phones, electronics and other items are prohibited from entering the facility, and in some instances may result in arrest and prosecution.
Arrive approximately 15 minutes before the scheduled visitation time (avoid arriving earlier to prevent any issues, as most correctional facilities have rules on what time you can enter correctional grounds). Do not arrive late or you visit will be cancelled.
Inmates in solitary confinement, restrictive housing, protective custody (etc.) may not be permitted visitors or may have a different day or time from general population.
While some individuals may feel anxious about visiting a correctional facility, knowing what to expect and following the guidelines can help ease any concerns. If you're unsure about something during visitation, always check with facility staff.
