Description of Facility

Green River Correctional Complex opened in 1994, and is located in Central City Kentucky, part of Muhlenberg County. The prison houses approximately 982 adult males who are of medium and minimum custody levels. Inmates who are in the medium custody units are housed in double bunk beds. The segregation unit, which is maximum security, houses inmates in single cells. Offenders who are in the minimum unit are housed in an open dormitory setting.

Programs for anger management, drug and alcohol addiction, victim awareness, family reunification and life skills are available to all inmates at Green River Correctional Complex. Adult basic education courses and technical training in a variety of disciplines is available and teaches the inmates new skills they can use after they are released, these include carpentry, masonry, and the ability to earn National Career Readiness Certification.

What you can send an inmate

mail

Inmates incarcerated in Kentucky are allowed to receive correspondence through the mail via United States Postal Service (USPS). In order to send them mail you will need to know their current location and identification number. You can find these by doing a Kentucky inmate search. 

Always include the following on the envelope:

  • The inmate's First and Last name
  • Their identification number
  • The facility name and address
  • Your full name and address in the return field

Inmates in Kentucky are allowed to receive the following through the mail:

  • Letters - inmates can have up to 10 letters in their possession.
  • Envelopes - up to three metered postage printed envelopes.
  • Photos - offenders can receive 4"x6" photos. Instant/polaroid photos are not allowed. No nudity, guns, drugs, alcohol, or gang related symbols can be in the photos.
  • New softcover books newspapers and magazines mailed directly from a distributor like Barnes and Noble. Publications must not contain nudity, be sexually explicit, or present a security threat to the facility.

Do not send the following through the mail:

  • Stamps, stationary, money orders, cash, checks
  • Stickers, homemade cards, musical/electronic cards, non-white envelopes
  • Coloring book pages, drawings
  • Marker, crayon, glitter, or raised decorations are prohibited on correspondence
  • White out, glue, paint or any other liquid on the letters

Sending Monthly Holiday Care/Food Packages
Kentucky inmates who have completed the intake process and 60 days at their new location are allowed to receive care packages through Union Supply Direct.  These packages contain food, snacks, drinks and hygiene items. You will need to know the inmate's DOC number, which can be found by utilizing the inmate search on this page. Inmates are allowed the following:

  • Three property orders per calendar quarter
  • Unlimited food orders, but a maximum of $125 per quarter
How Inmate Calls Work

 Kentucky Department of Corrections only allows inmates to make outgoing collect calls.  Offenders have access to telephones throughout the day excluding during count times and if the facility goes into lockdown. Phone calls may be monitored and recorded. Kentucky DOC policy on inmate calls.

How to send money to an inmate

   Kentucky Department of Corrections uses Access Corrections for inmate banking. This allows friends and family members to send an inmate up to $300 daily through a variety of methods.

  • By Web:  Through the Access Corrections website.
     
  • By Mobile App: Through the Access Corrections App, available on Apple and Android.
     
  • By Telephone: Over the phone by calling 1-866-345-1884
     
  • By Mail: Send funds to an inmate using a money order or check.
    • Start by making the check payable to Access Corrections.
    • Fill out a Kentucky Inmate offender trust deposit form.
    • Mail the deposit form and payment to:

  • By Walk-In: Register an account with cashpaytoday, then get a barcode for your transaction and deposit cash at any cashpaytoday location, these include Dollar General, Family Dollar, CVS, and 7-Eleven.

How to do an Inmate Search

 In order to obtain information about an inmate, including their ID number, current location, and sentencing information, you can use the Kentucky inmate database. This information is important for keeping in touch with your loved one. Don't forget that you will need the inmate's ID in order to send letters, money, or schedule visits.

Visiting Information/FAQs

Before visiting an inmate in Kentucky, you must be on the inmate's approved visitors list. To start the approval process, follow these steps:

  • All prospective visitors are required to fill out a Kentucky visiting information form.
  • Complete, print, sign and mail the application back to the warden's office of the institution.
  • Once you are approved, you can attend a visiting session.

Important things to know when visiting an inmate at Green River Correctional Complex:

  • You must have a valid government issued photo ID with you in order to visit.
  • Inmates are allowed a single visit on Saturdays only.
  • Visits can last the entire length of the visiting day if capacity allows it, however visits will be shortened once capacity is reached and visitors will be cycled out to make room for new visitors.
  • You cannot be dropped off to visitation, you must have a vehicle.
  • No one may wait in the vehicle while you attend visitation.
  • Children must be on the inmate's approved visitation list and accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • A brief hug and kiss are allowed at the beginning and end of a visit.
  • You can purchase food and drinks from the vending machines but they must be opened in front of staff and transferred to a paper plate, the wrapper disposed of.
  • Visitors can possess one ring, one necklace with a single medallion, and a medical alert device.
  • Jackets, coats, and outerwear should be left in your vehicle or placed on the hangers outside the visiting area.
  • Visitors are subject to search, as is their vehicle.
  • No food or drinks may enter into the facility.
  • No purses, wallets, or handbags are allowed.
  • No cell phones, pagers, cameras, or electronics of any kind.  Secure these items in your car, or in a visitation locker if available.
  • Do not bring pets of any kind, you cannot leave them in your car and will be denied entry to the complex.
  • No tobacco products or lighters.
  • No weapons, No drugs or alcohol.

Dress Code and Visiting Rules

  • No see through, fishnet, or sheer clothing
  • No halter tops, no tube tops, no tank tops
  • No hoodies
  • Shirts must be able to be tucked into pants/skirts
  • No spandex, leggings, jeggings, or tight fitting clothing
  • No mini skirts, slit skirts, or slit dresses
  • No clothing that exposes the midriff or bosom
  • No backless tops or dresses
  • A slip must be worn with a dress
  • Undergarments must not be showing
  • No braless attire
  • No flip flops, sandals, open toe shoes, open back shoes, or bare feet allowed
  • No clothing that reveals the midriff or shoulders
  • No clothing that reveals cleavage
  • No hats, gloves, sunglasses, or Fitbits
  • No clothing that contains profanity, or be symbolic of drugs or gangs, sexual symbols, or contain offensive or threatening language/images are prohibited
  • No clothing that promotes alcohol or tobacco


Kentucky Video Visitation
Video visitation is contracted through Securus Technologies. Inmates are allowed video visitation is everyday.  Video visits are 25 minutes long and must be scheduled through Securus Technologies at least 48 hours in advance.
