Established in 1889, Kentucky State Penitentiary stands as the oldest correctional facility in the state. Serving as the sole maximum security prison in Kentucky, it has a capacity of up to 856 adult male inmates, including those on death row. The facility consists of five cell houses with individual cells, as well as a protective custody unit, segregation unit for death row and general population. A minimum unit dormitory style facility is located just outside the perimeter fence.
In addition to incarceration, residents have the opportunity to participate in vocational classes and earn National Certifications in various fields such as wastewater and water treatment operations, as well as pursue an associates degree in applied science and arts.
