The Newton Correctional Facility, situated five miles south of Newton on a 1,476-acre property, comprises both a minimum-security and a medium-security facility.
The Newton Correctional Facility was established as a new medium-security facility in 1997, while the Correctional Release Center has been in operation since 1965 and has undergone various mission changes over the years. Currently, the CRC houses minimum-security offenders preparing for release, while the Newton Correctional Facility features five general population housing units with two or three-person secured cells. The Correctional Release Center offers open-bay, dormitory-style housing, and includes a SHU unit for segregating offenders from the general population for reasons like protective custody.
Work assignments at Newton Correctional Facility include cooking, facility maintenance, janitorial duties, landscape maintenance, clerical tasks, and other support assignments. The Iowa Prison Industry program offers on-the-job training and skill development.
Recreational activities for both minimum and medium-security populations include team and individual sports, hobby craft, wellness instruction, and TV viewing. Religious programs involving different faith groups are also available.
