Calhoun State Prison opened in 1993, and is situated in Calhoun County Georgia. It is a medium security facility that accommodates up to 1,677 adult male inmates. Inmates at this institution sleep in cells with either triple bunked beds or double bunked beds, and they may also be housed in one of eight open dormitories. In cases of disciplinary issues or safety concerns, inmates can be placed in segregation units with isolated single cells. Educational opportunities for inmates include GED courses, adult basic education classes, literacy programs, and correspondence courses. Additionally, offenders can receive vocational training in areas such as horticulture, barbering, building maintenance, groundskeeping, clerical work, sanitation, forklift operation, and culinary services.

Georgia Department of Corrections requires all visitors complete a visitors application and be approved before visiting. Start by doing the following:
- All visitors regardless of age must fill out a visitors application.
- You must gather and submit a copy of all the documents required in the application, this includes a valid government issued photo ID.
- The application must be completed, signed and notarized.
