Central State Prison opened in 1978 and has the capacity to house 1,153 medium security male offenders. Located in Macon Georgia, Central State Prison operates the satellite facility Macon Transitional Center.
Inmates are housed in six units each comprised of four pods which contain twelve two man cells, that house general population inmates. Additionally, there are 141 level III mental health beds, and a fast track unit that houses inmates (288) in an open dormitory. While incarcerated inmates can participate in work detail that includes a garment factory, and a construction crew. Vocational opportunities for residents include plumbing, carpentry, and building maintenance.
