East Moline Correctional Center opened in 1980, and was originally a mental health facility until it's conversion to a state penitentiary. As a minimum security prison, East Moline Correctional provides a local workforce that assists in the surrounding communities to clean up after weather phenomenon.
The facility itself can house up to 925 inmates, but usually operates with around 500. While incarcerated inmates are encouraged to learn a vocational skill which includes various construction related skills, culinary skills, and custodial maintenance.
