Folsom State Prison is located in Represa California, and opened in 1880. This facility is known from the Johnny Cash Song, and for being the first prison in the world to have electric power, powered from the dam that inmate laborers had built. Folsom was also the first maximum security prison in America, and held hangings until 1937. Folsom State Prison is comprised of five housing units; a single cell housing unit, four multiple occupancy cell housing units, and 14 open bay dormitory housing units.
Vocational programs at Folsom State Prison include plumbing, carpentry, welding, masonry, building maintenance, auto mechanics, electrical, sustainable ecological environmental development, and office services. California's Prison Industry Authority provides Jobs at Folsom in a license plate factory, in printing and a sign shop, and in metal fabrication.
