Hernando Correctional Institution is located in Brooksville Florida on approximately twenty acres of land leased from the Hernando County Airport Authority. Established in 1952 as the Brooksville Road Prison, the facility served as a hub for male inmates offering labor services to the local community. In 1992, it underwent expansion and transformation into the Brooksville Drug Treatment Center and Work Camp, marking its integration into the wider correctional system. Subsequently, on October 1, 1996, it transitioned into a major institution under the name Hernando Correctional Institution.
In August 1999, HCI shifted its focus from a male adult institution to a facility accommodating adult and youthful female offenders. By April 2012, it became exclusively adult-oriented, introducing two Faith and Character-Based dormitories.
Hernando Correctional Institution encompasses fifteen buildings, including four open-bay dormitories, each with two wings. Beginning January 2006, a wing of the C dormitory was converted into a confinement unit for inmates placed in Administrative or Disciplinary confinement.
