Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center (MASAC) is located in Plymouth Massachusetts, and specializes in treating addiction, including opioid, and alcohol. Residents are civilly committed by the courts and required to undergo a 90 day detoxification program. This facility is run in co-operation with Wellpath, who is responsible for the day to day treatment of residents, while the department of corrections provides security and maintenance.
Opioid related deaths in Massachusetts are at their highest level ever with over 2,359 deaths occurring in 2022 alone. Statistics show that while heroin overdose deaths have fallen to their lowest levels in over 10 years, cocaine and fentanyl deaths have spiked to some of their highest levels. The uptick in cocaine related overdose deaths is believed to be caused in part by contamination with fentanyl.
