The Reception and Medical Center (RMC) was specifically designed to fulfill two important roles within the Florida Department of Corrections: serving as a Reception/Diagnostic/Classification unit for newly committed male felony inmates and as the primary medical facility for selected inmates. Notably, RMC holds the distinction of being the first unit of its kind to be operational in the department. The reception function began on September 23, 1968, marking the processing of the first inmate, while the 120-bed hospital officially opened its doors on September 1, 1972.
RMC's mission is three-fold: receiving and processing new inmates from 23 designated counties, providing comprehensive medical services including hospital care, a cancer center, a dialysis unit, and an ambulatory surgical unit within the secure perimeter, and serving as a transportation hub for inmate transfers, with over 400 inmates entering and departing annually. RMC plays a crucial role in processing over 18,000 inmates each year.
The capacity of the Reception Medical Center is 1,503 male offenders including adults and youths. This facility is responsible for the satellite units RMC West and the RMC work camp.
