Special Management Unit | Visitors Guide

Description of Facility

The Special Management Unit in Georgia opened in 2006 and can house up to 192 adult male inmates. Located in Jackson Georgia, the Special Management Unit houses inmates who are considered dangerous and potentially violent and viewed as a threat to themselves or to others. Comprised of six cell blocks the SMU houses inmates in single cells. The Special Management Unit also houses male inmates who are awaiting execution and are on Georgia's death row.

During execution days no visits will be allowed. Executions are conducted in a building isolated from everything located in the prison's yard.

Visiting Hours & Information

Georgia Department of Corrections requires all visitors complete a visitors application and be approved before visiting. Start by doing the following:

All visitors regardless of age must fill out a visitors application.
You must gather and submit a copy of all the documents required in the application, this includes a valid government issued photo ID.
The application must be completed, signed and notarized.
Familiarize yourself with the Georgia Inmate Visitation Policy and Rules to know what is expected from all visitors.
Once your visitors application is approved, you can Schedule a Visit with an Inmate in Georgia.
If something happens and you can no longer make the scheduled visit you can cancel a visit here.

Visiting Hours for Special Management Unit:
Visits will not be conducted during the first thirty days an inmate is incarcerated at the SMU and are cancelled during an active execution order.

Tier III inmates:
Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays
9:00am-3:00pm

Specialized Mental Health Treatment Unit inmates:
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Holidays
9:00am-3:00pm

All visits must be scheduled in advance, Schedule a visit with an inmate in Georgia.

Visitors are searched before entering into visitation. If you have a cell phone, drugs, or tobacco on you, you will be arrested.
