Stateville Correctional Center opened in 1925, and is a maximum security prison. This facility oversees the operations of Northern Reception and Classification Center, Stateville Minimum Security Unit. Currently, this facility can house up to 3,020 residents. This facility is situated on over 2,000 acres of land, and has guard towers positioned over a thirty foot wall. General population inmates at Stateville are housed in three units.
The Northern Reception and Classification Center provides intake and orientation to new inmates. The minimum security unit houses an additional 384 offenders in two units.
